It is already forgotten
All the blood and the glory
So willingly and freely
Dispensed in the mud

The flames are long gone
In the shadows of the mind
Where the trek of our fears
Once rumbled and raged

Yet the tears never stall
In a mother’s new plight
Her trial by fire
Each bleary-eyed dawn

Blood stains every mile
Every wavering breath
From the sorrowful depths
Of the many who survived
